Vitamin D

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that plays an important role throughout the body. It is best known for supporting calcium absorption and healthy bones and teeth, but its role extends far beyond bone health.

The active form of vitamin D, calcitriol, acts as a hormone and influences gene expression and many cellular processes. Vitamin D contributes to the normal function of the immune system, muscles, calcium and phosphorus metabolism, and overall cellular function.

The body can produce vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) in the skin when exposed to sunlight. Vitamin D can also be obtained from certain foods and supplements.

Vitamin D works with other nutrients

Vitamin D does not function in isolation. Its metabolism and biological activity are closely connected with other vitamins, minerals and nutrients.

Magnesium is particularly important. It acts as a cofactor in several enzymes involved in the transport, metabolism and activation of vitamin D.

Vitamin K2 works within calcium metabolism and supports the normal function of vitamin K-dependent proteins involved in bone health and calcium regulation.

Vitamin B6 is a coenzyme involved in numerous enzymatic reactions, including amino-acid metabolism, neurotransmitter synthesis and normal nervous-system function. It forms part of the broader nutritional network that supports normal physiological processes.

Vitamin D Needs a Supporting Nutritional Environment

Vitamin D should not be viewed as an isolated nutrient. Its ability to be absorbed, metabolised and utilised by the body depends on the nutritional environment in which it is taken.

Because vitamin D is fat-soluble, taking vitamin D with a meal containing dietary fat can support its absorption. Healthy sources of fat, including foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, can be part of this nutritional environment.

Vitamin D also interacts with other vitamins and minerals. Magnesium is particularly important, as it is required as a cofactor for several enzymes involved in vitamin D metabolism and activation.

Other nutrients, including vitamin K2, zinc, vitamin B6 and boron, also have important roles in mineral metabolism, enzymatic reactions, cellular function and other processes that form part of the broader system in which vitamin D operates.
